Description:

Share Our Selves Planter Box Vegetable Garden Project, 9-11am Saturday November 16, 2019

Share Our Selves is a community outreach organization in Costa Mesa started nearly 50 years ago by St. John the Baptist Church, 1015 Baker St. SOS has medical and dental offices as well as a food pantry and emergency financial services at 1550 Superior Ave. SOS is expanding to the adjacent property at 1540 Superior Ave.

The city has asked for landscaping to be added to the new property. The plan involves building, staining, lining, filling with soil and planting with vegetables 8 planter boxes size 4 foot wide by 4 foot deep by 30” high, plus two planter boxes size 4 foot wide by 2 foot deep by 30” high.

We began the project with 10 volunteers on Love Costa Mesa Day, Saturday May 18, 2019. We have a long way to go on this project and there will be more project days coming. This one is Saturday, November 16, 2019 from 9am-11am.

We will continue to run project workshops on Saturday mornings at 1540 Superior Ave from 9-11am. Days and hours may vary each week. Check each specific project page at lovecostamesa.org for details.

Please sign up each time you wish to join a workshop. This automatically covers you with insurance. You will have to create an account on the lovecostamesa.org web site. They do not share any of your account information.

We encourage everyone attending a workshop to wear old clothes they do not mind ruining. We start in shade but end up in the sun. We do have access to inside the building for chairs, shade and restrooms. Long sleeve shirts, long pants and sturdy shoes are advised. So are wide brimmed hats, sunscreen, good hand gloves and your favorite hydration beverage.

This project is using as much recycled material as we can find- throw away pallets and cull lumber and donations of everything else. If you know of any such lumber please contact Rock through this web site.

We need everyone to bring whatever tools they may have to help. 120v hand power saws, 120v power sliding arm compound mitre saws, portable "jawed" type workbenches, 120v or battery power drills and/or hex bit drivers, #2 phillips head bits and/or screwdrivers, drill bit sets, 120v or battery power sanders, long 3-wire extension cords and power strips, hammers, nail pullers, crowbars, tape measures, pencils, empty quart sized containers to hold stains, Varathane Kona and Dark Walnut wood stains, old rags, old paintbrushes, big tarps, hand shovels, planting soil, any vegetable plants or seeds, wheelbarrows, wagons, long water hoses with nozzles, brooms and dustpans for cleanup, portable chairs to rest in outside as needed, snacks and/or cold drinks as desired. We use many #10 x 4” deck screws (Grabber or equivalent) available at most hardware stores. Donations appreciated. If you think of anything else that may be helpful, bring it.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact the project leader, Rock Hunter, through the lovecostamesa.org web site. Once you have made an account and signed up for a project you can email him. The project will be ongoing at the 1540 Superior Ave, Costa Mesa, CA 92627 location between 9-11am most Saturdays. Come when you can, leave when you need to. If you wish to be there outside 9-11am (earlier or later), please contact Rock Hunter.
